Microsoft Redefines “Vista Capable”

Microsoft originally described its Windows Vista Capable program as the following (all bold emphasis added by Seattle Times author):

“Through the Windows Vista Capable program, Windows XP-based PCs that are powerful enough to run Windows Vista are now available from leading PC manufacturers worldwide, including Acer Inc., Dell Inc., Fujitsu Limited, Gateway Inc., HP, Lenovo, NEC Corp., Sony Corp., Toshiba and more. The Windows Vista Capable logo is designed to assure customers that the PCs they buy today will be ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista and can run the core experiences of Windows Vista.”

Shortly following the news of the lawsuit, the explanation of the Windows Vista Capable program appeared to have changed to this:

“A new PC running Windows XP that carries the Windows Vista Capable PC logo can run Windows Vista. All editions of Windows Vista will deliver core experiences such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run these core experiences at a minimum. Some features available in the premium editions of Windows Vista — like the new Windows Aero user experience — may require advanced or additional hardware.”

Windows Vista is officially in stores today, but before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, make sure you’re getting what you expect. With Vista’s ability to adjust its features based on the hardware it’s on, CNET reports:

Customers who pay about $233 for an upgrade copy of Vista Ultimate (or about $399 for the full version), for instance, could essentially end up running the equivalent of Vista Home Basic ($100 to $199) if Vista’s installation software finds that the computer doesn’t have the hardware to run specific Ultimate features optimally.

If you’re upgrading your existing PC, while it’s not foolproof, give your computer a once-through with the Vista Upgrade Advisor. The checker doesn’t tell you whether or not the swanky Vista features like Aero or BitLocker will work on your machine, so buying from a retailer who will back a return on the OS – like PCs for Everyone – will get you a little extra insurance. Ps3 vs 360

Posted by Dresonic on January 21, 2007

It can be disputed and even taken to court that the 360 has and edge over the slick and sexy Ps3 that has been a superstar for the makers and a hater for the consumers. No Really, forking out 20 bucks is hard enough to buy food at walmart much more buying a piece of plastic for $700 bucks. Sony wake up and smell the coffee or tea…what ever it is you guys over at sony are drinking wake up and smell it. Read the rest of this entry »
