Commonwealth Games gold medallists Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson are heavily favoured to capture the 2006 RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards at the Pegasus Hotel tonight, starting at 7:00 pm.

The duo head a list of 10 men and 10 women nominated for the prestigious national awards.

Powell twice equalled his 100m world record and won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Australia last year, while Simpson ended the year as the world’s top female sprinter after winning the sprint double at the same meet.

The other male nominees are athletes Usain Bolt, Omar Brown, Maurice Smith and Maurice Wignall; footballer Claude Davis; cricketers Chris Gayle and Jerome Taylor; cyclist O’Neil Samuels and boxer Nicholas Walters.

Commonwealth medallists Veronica Campbell, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Olivia McKoy, Kenia Sinclair, Trecia Smith and Novelene Williams join cyclist Iona Wynter and swimmer Alia Atkinson in the female category.
